Infant Oral Health Exams in Charlotte, NC

The first tooth is a milestone worth celebrating, and it is also the signal to book your child’s very first dental visit. Decay can begin as soon as teeth erupt, which is why national pediatric health organizations recommend an oral health exam within six months of that first tooth or by the first birthday, whichever comes first.

University Pediatric Dentistry has been guiding Charlotte families through these early milestones for over 15 years. Dr. Funny is our board-certified pediatric dentist, a repeat Charlotte TOP Dentist and the owner of our practice, and she has built a team around the kind of unhurried, relationship-first visits that help babies and parents feel comfortable from day one, setting the tone for a lifetime of positive dental experiences.

Why Infant Oral Health Exams Matter

An infant oral health exam is so much more than a quick peek inside a baby’s mouth. It is the start of a dental home, a place where your child’s oral development is tracked, questions are answered and small issues are caught before they become big ones. Establishing that relationship early makes every future visit easier for your child.

Major dental organizations including the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, the American Dental Association and the American Academy of Pediatrics all recommend a first dental visit by age one, and for good reason. Early visits allow us to identify cavity risk factors, provide personalized feeding and hygiene guidance and apply preventive treatments that protect those delicate new teeth. They also help parents understand what to expect as more teeth come in and how general pediatric care should evolve over time.

What Happens at Your Baby’s First Visit

We designed our infant exam to feel nothing like the clinical appointments many parents remember from their own childhoods. The visit is gentle, conversational and centered on your comfort as much as your baby’s.

During the appointment, you can expect us to:

  • Review medical history: We walk through your baby’s health, feeding habits and any concerns you have noticed
  • Perform a knee-to-knee exam: Your baby lies comfortably between your knees and ours while we look at teeth, gums and oral tissues
  • Check growth and development: We evaluate tongue mobility, lip posture, airway signs and early bite patterns
  • Screen for cavity risk: We look for early demineralization, nursing-related decay and other red flags
  • Provide parent coaching: We cover brushing technique, fluoride, teething, pacifier use and healthy feeding habits

After the clinical portion, we spend time answering questions, because early parenthood comes with plenty of them. If we notice any signs that suggest a functional concern such as restricted tongue or lip movement, we can walk you through next steps, including whether evaluation for tongue-tie treatment might be worth exploring.

How to Prepare Your Baby for a First Dental Visit

Preparation starts with you. Babies read parental cues, so bringing a calm, upbeat energy goes a long way toward a smooth appointment. Feeding your little one before the visit and packing a favorite toy or blanket help set up success. We schedule our youngest patients in the morning when babies and toddlers are typically at their happiest and most alert, setting the stage for a positive experience.

It is also helpful to know what to bring and what we will discuss. A list of medications, a sense of your family dental history and notes about any habits such as thumb-sucking or extended bottle use give us useful context. You can review our first visit tips ahead of time so nothing about the appointment feels unfamiliar.

Building a Lifetime of Healthy Smiles Early

Preventive care at this age is less about procedures and more about habits. The routines you start in infancy, such as iintroducing a soft toothbrush when teeth appear and avoiding bottles in bed, protect the smile your child will carry into adulthood.

We reinforce those habits at every visit and layer in age-appropriate protections as your child grows, from fluoride varnish and sealants to personalized home-care coaching. Because cavity prevention is the foundation of pediatric dentistry, we talk openly with parents about what works, what the evidence shows and how to keep cavity prevention realistic in real life.
